I also brought the SPOT out to play with it some. Unfortunately, after successful testing the previous weekend, the device could no longer lock in on the GPS satellites. Everything looked okay, but no matter what I tried (or where I tried it), the GPS LED would flash red. I was a little dismayed, but thought that maybe the landscape was causing problems. Unfortunately, I tried it again when I got home and it didn't work then, either - even in places where it had worked previously.
So... I put in a message to SPOT technical support. They got back to me within four hours and suggested I put in a warranty claim and directed me to the site. I filled in the information and got an RMA number within ten hours. Not too shabby. I can expect a new unit in the mail within 7-10 days and I have to ship the broken one back to them. So far, the customer service has been quite good. I'm a little foggy on how to migrate the subscriptions over to the new device but I'm sure there will be instructions for that. More details as they become available!
While we were gone, our neighbour was nice enough to check our mail. Just after we got home, he was outside and got my attention - he had mail for us. I wandered over to his place and he gave me the mail. Just as I was about to leave, he said, "Hang on a second, I've got a surprise for you!"
He disappeared down into his basement and then came back up with... my new tires. We both had a bit of a chuckle at that - I'd specifically put **DO NOT LEAVE AT FRONT DOOR** as instructions for Canada Post when I placed the order, but looks like they did just that (again). My neighbour was a little perplexed when he wandered over that day to check the mail, he had no idea what they were until he took a look at them. That was nice of him to haul them over to his place, he could have just thrown them over the fence and been done with them. We should really get him a card or something...
Anyway, the MEFO tires look pretty impressive. Of course, I don't know a heck of a lot about tires, but the treads look deeper than the ones on the stock tires, and the compound does feel a little harder. I'm looking forward to getting them put on and trying them out!
Other than that, not much has changed. It's still too cold to go out and work on the KLR (and I'm kind of broken right now, which would preclude that anyway), and there is a lot of snow out there. I was hoping to be riding in March, but with the way things are going, I'm not sure if that's going to be possible this year...
Safe riding!
